Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi said Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo had to obtain permission from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono if he planned to run for president representing the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
“Any governor who runs for president needs to acquire his or her non-active status, which can only be approved by the President," Gamawan said on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
The minister said this was regulated by Law No. 42/2008 on presidential elections.
"So a governor, who has been nominated by a political party or a group of parties for a presidential election, has to seek permission from the President," he said.
Jokowi said earlier on Friday that he was ready to run for president on the PDI-P ticket. (atw)
